Six English Premier League players make history as Senegal lift AFCON 2025

Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic final that stretched into extra time, sealing a historic second continental title for the Lions of Teranga.

A standout feature of Senegal’s triumph was the presence of players based in the English Premier League. Six members of the AFCON-winning squad currently ply their trade in England: Haj Malick Diouf, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, Pape Sarr, and Habib Diarra.

Haj Malick Diouf (West Ham United), Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye (both Everton), Pape Sarr (Tottenham Hotspur), and Habib Diarra (Sunderland) all lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy while representing English Premier League clubs. Their success raised the total number of players to have won the Africa Cup of Nations while playing in the English Premier League to 26.

The inclusion of six English Premier League players in a title-winning Africa Cup of Nations squad marks a new tournament record, surpassing the previous high of four players, which had been achieved in the 2021 and 2023 editions.

Senegal’s victory reinforced their growing dominance on the African stage as they achieved the Africa Cup of Nations title for the second time in 4 years.
