Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy has been recounting the highly toxic environment at French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes.
The 28-year-old France born attacker was on the roaster of Stade Rennais for two seasons (2020 - 2022) but his journey at the Breton club was far from rosy. In an interview with L'Équipe, the Guinean forward revealed a heavy and challenging environment.
“At Rennes, for example, it was a toxic environment. In the end, I gave up, it was pointless: no matter what you do, when you're the scapegoat, you're the scapegoat. “In certain contexts, you convince yourself that if you miss your chance, you're dead, and then everything becomes complicated. It's too easy to make excuses, to blame it on the collective,” he said.
Notwithstanding the seemingly harsher environment, the sturdy attacker has picked valuable lessons on the road to his two season’s stint.
“Never let yourself be defeated, even when the team is going through tough times. “Even Messi and Mbappé get criticized. It's better when your supporters encourage you, but I don't need to love to perform. When you're not doing well, you need to take refuge in work.
“Even though it's easier to do when everything is going well. That's my way of proceeding. “I push myself, so I add another layer of work. I forged this mentality thanks to what I've been through,” he added.
The ebony black forward at Borussia Dortmund has turned his trials into strength on the field of play. He boasts impressive statistics this season of 24 goals and 5 assists in 32 for both domestic and European competitions. He has an impressive 11 UEFA Champions League games under his belt with 10 goals and 3 assists registered in those games.
