Serhou Guirassy scores late to help Dortmund avoid DFB Pokal upset

Borussia Dortmund were given all they could handle by scrappy third tier side Rot-Weiss Essen on Monday but Serhou Guirassy scored late to give his team a 1-0 victory in their first competitive fixture for the 2025-26 season from Germany’s DFB Pokal.

The Guinea national team superstar received the ball over 25 yards from goal before turning and firing a low shot through the crowd to beat RW Essen goalkeeper Jakob Golz. Guirassy’s strike came at a timely moment with Dortmund supporters sweating the possibility of extra time and a potential penalty shootout.

RW Essen certainly had the upset on their minds, putting in an inspired performance against a Dortmund team that reached the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals only a month ago before falling to Real Madrid. Guirassy was selected in a strong eleven by coach Niko Kovač for a final dress rehearsal for Dortmund before they begin the Bundesliga season on Saturday.

But after playing to a scoreless draw through eighty minutes, Guirassy’s hopeful effort proved to be the difference. After racking up 38 goals and 9 assists in 49 games across all competitions last season, Guirassy is hoping to replicate his impressive numbers while leading Dortmund to a substantial improvement this season after finishing 4th in the Bundesliga.
