Shalulile reflects on equalling Chiefs legend’s PSL record

Peter Shalulile has thanked his teammates after he equalled Kaizer Chiefs legend Siyabonga Nomvethe’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) goal-scoring record in Mamelodi Sundowns’ hard-fought 2-0 victory over Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.

The Sundowns striker scored his 129th PSL goal, his first of the new 2025/26 season, during the Magesi match at a packed Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

Jayden Adams opened the scoring for Sundowns, with Shalulile netting the second goal. Both strikes came late in the second half as Magesi played the last 10 minutes of the game with 10 men after Lehlohonolo Mtshali received a red card.

The milestone by the Namibian international comes just two weeks after speculation that he might be leaving Sundowns to join Tunisian giants Esperance.

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the Magesi tie, Shalulile was full of gratitude to his Sundowns teammates, stating, “To be honest, I just want to thank my teammates.” He also expressed confidence in his goal-scoring ability for the rest of the season. “I believe many more goals will come,” he added.

“I’m looking forward to the new season, my first start. I don’t want to mention more things about the top goal scorer because I know it’s going to end very well this year.”

Shalulile also revealed his ambitious target of 25 goals for the season. “To score many more goals, I believe that many goals will come; I just need to get my confidence back,” he added. “25 goals, with God by my side, it’s possible.”

With the win, Sundowns moved into third place on the league standings. Their focus now shifts to the MTN8 semi-final second leg, where they will host Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.
