Former Zamalek captain Mahmoud Abdel Razek “Shikabala” has spoken about the team’s needs ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window, while also expressing his satisfaction if his former club finishes second in the current Nile Egyptian League season.
He evaluated the performances of new signings Juan Alfena and Chico Banza, and commented on Abdullah El-Said’s role under head coach Yannick Ferrera.
Speaking to MBC Masr 2, the Zamalek icon explained:
“Last season we were missing several players. We made a number of signings this summer, but we still need further reinforcements in January. Most importantly, we need to sign a right-back to ease the workload on Omar Gaber.”
Shikabala praised Juan Alfena, saying the winger has “great quality and high potential,” but noted the club should have signed two players in that position following his own departure and the exit of Ahmed Sayed “Zizo.”
On Chico Banza, he added:
“He put pressure on himself, but things didn’t go his way in the first match. However, he still has a lot to offer.”
The former playmaker also stressed the importance of playing Abdullah El-Said in his natural role:
“Ferrera needs time, but he made a mistake with El-Said in the first two games. At this age, he cannot play as a playmaker. When he was finally used in the midfield, he made a big difference. He’s the reason the ball moves more smoothly. But he should not be asked to play with his back to goal.”
Looking ahead, Shikabala set realistic expectations for the club this season:
“If Zamalek finish second, I’ll be happy. We’re building a team. I don’t expect us to win every trophy right now — the priority is to return to the CAF Champions League.”
Shikabala, who retired earlier this year after more than two decades with the White Knights, remains one of the most beloved figures in the club’s history and continues to voice his support for Zamalek’s future.
