Silver Strikers and Wanderers meet in Malawi season curtain raiser

Malawi elite league champions Silver Strikers and Airtel Top 8 winners Mighty Wanderers meet on Saturday, March 29 in Lilongwe in a curtain-raiser for the 2025 TNM Super League.

The two giants will clash in the NBS Bank Charity Cup Shield at Bingu National Stadium hoping to gauge their preparedness for the new season kicking off on April 5, 2025.

Both teams have plenty to prove. Silver new coach Peter Mgangira has a lot to show that his promotion from assistant coach after Peter Mponda’s departure to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets was well deserved.

Mgangira and Mponda presided over a remarkable 2024 season losing just once in the league the entire season and kept an unbeaten home run.

It is such lofty standards that Mgangira should be seeking to match and even better.

“This is a very important game for us and the players.  A win would take the pressure off our shoulders allowing us to start the league defence calmy next week. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every player to give it their all at 100 percent and fight for this jersey,” Mgangira told the club’s website.

Silver have maintained the core of the squad that won the league last season save for the exit of a few faces such as Mark Fodya who left the Bankers for greener pastures in Zimbabwe.

All eyes will be on Fodya’s replacement Precious Sambani who moved to the Lilongwe side after parting ways with Bullets.

Wanderers, too, have something to prove after losing at home and away to the champions last season. The Blantyre-based giants start the season minus first-choice goalkeeper Willliam Thole who is now on the books of Simba Bhora in Zimbabwe, paving the way for the signing of promising Chancy Mtete.

The young keeper is among new arrivals set to make their mark for Bob Mpinganjira’s side alongside striker Promise Kamwendo and midfielder Nanison Mbewe.
