Simy returns to scoring form in Saudi second tier with Al Orobah

Towering forward Simy Nwankwo ended a two-month scoring drought on Friday with two goals in Al Orobah’s 3-0 victory over Al Bukiryah in the Saudi second tier First Division League (FDL).

The 33-year-old former Crotone star and Nigeria national team player has struggled with poor form and being out of the team after a strong start to life in the Saudi second tier. But it appears that he is back in form with the promotion contenders. In the 34th minute, he opened the scoring after taking down a pass from Ayman Al Hujaili before finishing.

Early in the second half, Simy put the hosts beyond reach. After a run across the edge of the Al Bukiryah penalty area, the Nigerian set up former Cape Town City star Darwin Gonzalez on the left wing. The Venezuelan drew the attention of the opposition goalkeeper and a couple of defenders before cutting back for Simy to finish into an unguarded goal.

A late goal completed the scoring for Orobah, who are currently in third place on the table and eight points back of leaders Abha Club. They are two points back of second place Al Diriyah, who occupy the final direct promotion spot to the top flight Saudi Pro League. Teams ranked 3rd through 6th qualify for a promotion playoff to determine the third team that will gain promotion.

Simy now has an impressive record of 14 goals in 11 league appearances this season, leaving him tied for third in the league and three goals back of top scorer Sylla Sow. He and his club will return to action next Wednesday against Al Tai.
