Having experienced both sides of the fierce rivalry, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gaston Sirino has pinpointed a major difference between his current club and his former team, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sirino penned a deal with the Soweto giants as a free agent at the start of the 2024/25 PSL season, following his departure from Sundowns. Before the move to Amakhosi, the winger had found it challenging to secure a consistent starting role under then-Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena.

The highly-rated winger spent seven seasons at Sundowns after arriving in January 2018 from Club Bolivar in Bolivia. He made over 200 appearances in Sundowns colours with 41 goals and 44 assists to his name. During his successful spell with Sundowns, the South American star Sirino won several major trophies, including seven league titles and the African Football League [AFL] crown.

Joining Chiefs as a marquee signing in the off-season, he has been blowing hot and cold as the club looks to end its nine-year trophy drought. So far, the 34-year-old has featured in 23 matches across all competitions for Chiefs, contributing three goals and six assists.

Drawing on his experience with both Sundowns and Chiefs, Sirino highlighted the difference in squad depth between the two rivals.

"I think at Chiefs, there are not too many players, while at Sundowns there are many good players," said Sirino during Chiefs' media open day at Naturena on Monday.

He clarified this by pointing out that "when there are players who are injured at Chiefs, you can see that the team is short," citing Bradley Cross playing centre-back after Inacio Miguel's injury.

"So at Sundowns, there are too many players in every position, but the quality here at Chiefs is also good," added Sirino.
