Sofiane Feghouli joins Amanat Baghdad in surprise move to Iraq

Algerian star Sofiane Feghouli has joined Iraq Stars League side Amanat Baghdad ahead of the new season.

The former Valencia and Galatasaray attacking midfielder was without a club after leaving Fatih Karagümrük at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Feghouli, 35, was expected to join a club in the Middle East, but his move to Iraq came as a surprise. Amanat Baghdad signed Feghouli on a season-long deal.

The Iraqi capital side finished the league season 19th with 31 points but reclaimed league status following a relegation playoff win.

The experienced Feghouli has 82 caps for the Algerian National Team side and won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His move to Amanat Baghdad is not expected to make him a suitable option for the national side, as head coach Vladimir Petkovic prefers other players in his position.

Feghouli had stints in France, Spain, England, and Turkey. He won the Turkish league, cup, and super cup with Galatasaray.
