Young Ghanaian forward Mohammed Sofo is emerging as a player to watch for Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls and the 20-year-old received Man of the Match honors on Tuesday evening following Red Bulls' victory over second tier side Colorado Springs Switchbacks.
Sofo scored a first half brace as the American top flight side sprinted out to a 2-0 halftime lead against their opponents from the USL Championship. The graduate of Mali's Guidars FC academy opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a shot from his weaker foot which snuck by Colorado Springs goalkeeper Christian Herrera.
Red Bulls continued to show the difference in quality with Dennis Gjengaar making it 3-0 shortly after an hour gone. The hosts finally pulled a goal back in the 71st minute but Red Bulls added one more late on when substitute Eric Choupo-Moting set up Sean Nealis shortly after coming onto the pitch.
The Red Bulls continue to bring Sofo along gradually after mostly featuring for reserve side New York Red Bulls 2 the last two seasons. However he is earning a role with some bright signs, scoring two goals in four MLS matches and now adding two more goals to his tally on Tuesday night. Choupo-Moting has four goals and two assists between MLS and cup action so far in the early stages of the 2025 season.
Red Bulls will next face fellow MLS side FC Dallas or third tier USL League One club AV Alta in the Round of 16. They return to MLS action on Saturday when they host Los Angeles Galaxy at Red Bull Arena.
