South Africa crowned COSAFA U-17 champions for fourth time

South Africa were crowned champions of the COSAFA U-17 Championship for a record-equalling fourth time after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Angola in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Vela Khumalo’s charges were brilliant throughout the tournament and booked their place in next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, which is due to be held in Morocco.

Both South Africa and Angola were the clear favorites of the tournament after making their way to the final by demolishing other teams with huge goal margins. It was a quick start on Saturday for Amajimbos, who took the lead in the fifth minute when Omphemetse Sekgoto beat his marker and slotted home from close range. The half saw an evenly matched affair with opportunities flying at both ends.

Angola restored parity through Pedro Antonio in the 67th minute, but Siyabonga Mbongo sealed the win with ten minutes to go as South Africa won the tournament for the fourth time. The win took South Africa level with Zambia, who were utterly disappointing during the tournament.

Mozambique beat Comoros 3-0 to take the bronze medal. The three COSAFA representatives in the 2026 U-17 AFCON will be South Africa, Angola, and Mozambique.
