South African coach axes eight players at Zimbabwe’s Highlanders FC

Former South Africa national team assistant coach Thabo Senong has hit the ground running at Zimbabwe’s Highlanders FC.

The former South Africa under-20 national team trainer joined Zimbabwe’s oldest club on Monday ahead of the forthcoming 2026 Castle Lager Premier League (PSL) campaign.

Now, the ex-Lesotho national team mentor has not wasted time in stamping his authority at the club.

Two days after Senong’s arrival, Highlanders, who are also called Bosso, released eight players.

In a statement, Bosso confirmed the clear out which has also affected former SuperSport United forward Atusaye Nyondo.

Which players have Highlanders FC shown the exit door?

The Malawian footballer has been released from the club alongside Melikhaya Ncube, Mckinnon Mushore, Mthabisi Ncube, Honest Mhlanga, Nqobile Ndlovu, Martin Nhubu and Learnmore Muyambo.

“Highlanders Football Club would like to express its sincere gratitude to the individuals for their unwavering dedication and commitment during their tenure with the club. We wish them nothing but the very best in their future endeavors,” reads the club’s statement.

Senong replaced Dutchman Pieter De Jongh who parted ways with the club in December.

Founded in 1926, Highlanders FC are one of Zimbabwe’s oldest clubs boasting seven league titles. However, just as is the case with the country’s other giants Dynamos FC and Caps United, Bosso are struggling.
