South African international Lyle Foster has reacted to his ‘dream goal’ he scored against Manchester United in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford.
Foster and his Manchester United’s Cameroonian counterpart Bryan Mbeumo registered their first Premier League goals of the season on Saturday.
Reacting to the game, the forward explained how he grew up dreaming of playing at Old Trafford and the realization that he was now living his dream.
“For sure, it’s a dream for me, growing up having watched this my whole life. Being at Old Trafford and scoring is something I dreamt of but never thought would become reality. I thank God for this beautiful moment. But at the same time, I don’t understand the second goal. I feel like it was unjust,” Foster explained.
“I’m grateful to have scored and more than anything for the performance by the team. That’s why I feel like it stings so much to walk away with nothing.”
The Johannesburg-born player said he was disappointed to narrowly lose out to United although he was proud of the team’s second half performance.
“I’m disappointed for the game to end the way it ended. I feel like we deserved something from the game, for it to end in that way I think it was a bit unjust,” the South African said.
“It is what it is, unfortunate. We played really well, and I think we can be proud of that. The first half we were a bit taken aback by the way they came. I don’t think we expected them to come the way they did. We didn’t have our footing really, lost in a sense. But I think we came in at half-time, the Gaffer obviously changed a few things, and it was a different mindset going out.”
Reuben Amorim’s charges won the game 3-2 after a video assistant review and a penalty at Old Trafford.
It was such an anti-climax for Burnley who seemed to have done enough to salvage a point.
The former Orlando Pirates star reacted the fastest to stab the ball into the net with his outstretched left leg and silence Old Trafford.
The South African’s 55th minute goal cancelled out United’s lead earned by default after Burnley’s Josh Cullen’s 27th minute own goal.
However, the positive mood Foster’s goal gave the Clarets lasted just two minutes as Mbeumo restored United’s lead. It was his second goal in three games across all competitions since his switch from Brentford but his first in the Premier League in this campaign.
The Cameroonian made a clever run into the box then drifted back inside to slide a cut-back from the left into the net. Eventually, Jordan Anthony did drag Burnley back into the contest with an equaliser in the 66th minute. However, the drama was reserved for the injury- time.
All the visitors’ hard-work was undone by a penalty they gave away after one of their players tugged Ivorian Amad Diallo’s shirt resulting in a penalty which United skipper Bruno Fernandes converted seven minutes into added time.
The Portuguese atoned for his miss in last week’s game to hand the Red Devils their first league win of the season.
