Augustino Maduot, President of the South Sudan Football Association, officially took over as the new President of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) in Nairobi on Friday.
The handover ceremony was led by outgoing CECAFA president Wallace Karia, who doubles up as the president of Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), and attended by other regional representatives.
Immediately after taking over, South Sudan FA issued a statement to congratulate Maduot on the new role.
“The South Sudan Football Association extends heartfelt congratulations to Gen. Augustino Maduot on his appointment as the new CECAFA President,” read part of the statement.
“This significant milestone marks the dawn of a new era for football in our region. Gen. Maduot's leadership promises to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the development of the sport.
“We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to collaborative efforts that will elevate football across East Africa. Together, we can foster talent, enhance competition, and promote unity through sport.
“Congratulations once again, Gen. Maduot, on this well-deserved position.”
CECAFA is an association of the football playing nations in mostly East Africa and parts of Central Africa. An affiliate of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), CECAFA is the oldest sub-regional football organisation on the continent.
The body was founded unofficially in 1927. The competition was sponsored by the major Nairobi-based soap-manufacturing firm Gossage, owned by the British Lever Brothers. Its formation is often misattributed to William Gossage, founder of the Gossage company.
However, he died 50 years before the CECAFA was established.
