Southampton confirm Paul Onuachu’s departure to Trabzonspor

Southampton FC, newly relegated from the English Premier League, have confirmed an agreement with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor for the transfer of Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu.

The 31-year-old took part in the Saints’ top flight campaign last season where he appeared in 25 league games, scoring four goals in nine matches during a hot spell towards the end of the campaign as Southampton suffered relegation to the second tier EFL Championship at the end of the season.

He spent a season on loan at Trabzonspor during the 2023/24 season where he scored 15 goals in 21 appearances, reviving his dwindling fortunes before returning to St Mary’s Stadium.

In a brief statement on the club’s X page, Southampton confirmed the potential exit of the former Nigeria U-23 international: “We have agreed terms with Trabzonspor for the transfer of Paul Onuachu.”

The towering forward, who made his debut for Nigeria in 2019, has earned 24 international caps and scored three goals for the Super Eagles. He was also part of the squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
