Southern Derby encounter highlights Matchday 1 of 2025 NWFL Super Six

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six tournament is set to see a derby encounter in Matchday 1 as the championship kicks off on May 10 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State. The stage is set following the successful completion of the draws ceremony.

A thrilling South-South derby will take center stage between Bayelsa Queens FC who have maintained an unbeaten record this season, against their rivals, Rivers Angels FC. This will follow the tournament opener between Naija Ratels and Nasarawa Amazons.

Rivers Angels coach Whyte Ogbonda will be pushing to emulate Delta Queens’ unbeaten run in the 2022/23 season under the guidance of Tosan Blankson, who now manages Rivers Angels.

The fixture which pits two well-established figures in the NWFL against each other, and will undoubtedly be a battle of tactically sound sides promising a strategic battle on the pitch.

2025 Super Six kicks off with Abuja base Naija Ratels who trade tackles against Christopher Danjuma’s Nasarawa Amazons, followed by the NWFL Premiership Super Six derby at 09:00 that sees two of the most decorated teams, Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels, take on each other.

Meanwhile, the final game of the day will see defending champions Edo Queens lock horns against host team and debutants Remo Stars Ladies by 4PM.

Following Matchday 1 games, participating teams will have a period of rest before returning to the pitch for back-to-back action in Matchdays 2 and 3.

The winner of the NWFL Premiership Super Six will then go on to participate in the WAFU-B qualifying competition for a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
