The 2025-26 club season got underway in Tunisia on Sunday as Stade Tunisien defeated fellow top flight side US Monastir by a 2-0 score at the Stade Taïeb-Mehiri in Sfax for a playoff round from Tunisia’s Super Cup. ST advance to contest the Super Cup title against Tunisian champions Espérance Tunis following the result.
Rwanda national team midfielder Bonheur Mugisha converted a first half penalty kick to put Stade Tunisien ahead and the 2024-25 Coupe de Tunisie finalists never looked back. The club from Tunis suburb Le Bardo never looked back and appered to be far more prepared for the occasion than their counterparts, last season Tunisia Ligue 1 Professionnelle runners-up Monastir.
Mugisha’s penalty came after a careless challenge from USM midfielder Mazen Slama left the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
Monastir created little throughout the game and ST put themselves out of reach just before halftime with a brilliant team movement that ended with Tunisia under-20 national team forward Khalil Ayari’s calm finish.
The result will be encouraging for Stade Tunisien, who will represent Tunisia in the 2025-26 CAF Confederation Cup due to their status as runners-up in the nation’s domestic cup. ST will now face the toughest test in Tunisian football when they clash with local rivals Espérance in the Super Cup final on August 3 at the Stade Hammadi Agrebi.
