Stellenbosch coach: Kaizer Chiefs not good enough to score without our errors

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has insisted that Kaizer Chiefs could not have defeated his side 2-1 on Wednesday had the Western Cape-based team not made mistakes.

Barker said this in a post-match interview after losing the Betway Premiership match to Chiefs at FNB Stadium. He blamed his players for making errors that allowed the Soweto giants to crawl back into the game and atone for last week’s 1-0 loss to Cape Town City.

“In second-half, we tried to get ourselves back in the game,” he said. We tried to make things happen. Unfortunately, the ball was lost in the critical area leading to the goal.

“I don’t think they are good enough to have scored without us having to make errors. Unfortunately, we made one to two errors which led to their opportunities otherwise genuinely, I think we didn’t deserve to lose the game.”

Young forward Wandile Duba scored in either half to wipe out Khomotjo Lekoloane’s earlier strike for Stellenbosch to ease pressure on their coach Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian admitted that his players went into Wednesday’s game while carrying knocks from the Cape Town City game.

Nabi said: “It is not easy coming back from a goal down to score one to score two you need character… we made a tactical change by taking off a left back and putting a left winger,” he said.

Chiefs moved into fifth place after the win took their tally to 18 points, one point ahead of the seventh-placed Stellenbosch.
