Stellenbosch FC announce plans to transition veteran keeper into coaching

Stellenbosch FC of South Africa have unveiled a plan of how they want their veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt to transition into coaching.

While other teams leave their legends on their own to find their way in life after retirement, the Betway Premiership side has come up with a retirement model.

The 2025 CAF Confederation Cup semifinalists have extended Langeveldt’s contract for the forthcoming season. The new deals sees the veteran keeper clock 21 years in the professional football ranks of South Africa.

“Langeveldt will remain part of the first-team squad for the 2025/26 season before being provided the opportunity to transition into a backroom role, where he will serve as a goalkeeper coach for the club’s Reserve, Youth, and Ladies teams,” Stellenbosch’s statement reads.

“This agreement forms part of the club’s broader commitment to creating structured post-playing pathways for players who have served with distinction, as already reflected in the presence of former midfielder Angelo Kerspuy in the club’s Team Manager role.”

Langeveldt is the lone survivor from Stellenbosch squad that secured top-flight league promotion in the 2018/19 season from the National First Division.

Therefore, he has cemented his status as the Western Cape-based club’s legend.

“His experience and leadership, combined with a deep-rooted connection to both the club and the wider community, uniquely position him to make a lasting impact both on and off the pitch for Stellenbosch FC,” the club’s statement adds.
