Stellenbosch FC sign highly rated Belgian defender

South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC have turned to Europe for defensive reinforcements. The Betway Premiership team has signed Belgian defender Henri Stanic.

The 22-year-old has joined Steve Barker’s outfit from Maltese Premier League side Balzan Football Club. Stanic impressed at Balzan last season, weighing in with his performances with five goals in 28 league games.

Now, the Belgian wants to establish himself with the CAF Confederation Cup semifinalists. He has since explained that he joined the PSL team after being impressed by their project.

“The project at Stellenbosch FC is what attracted me to come to South Africa. I spoke to several people at the club, and I really like the project that is being worked on,” he told the club’s media.

“I’m also looking forward to playing in the domestic championship [the Betway Premiership] and to showcasing my talent in the country. I will fight for the badge and give 100% for the team. I am still young, and I have ambitions that I hope to achieve with the club.”

Stanic launched his career with Anderlecht FC’s youth teams before embarking on a professional career with clubs in Norway and Latvia.

He is now looking forward to making his mark in the Betway Premiership, which is considered among the continent’s best domestic leagues.

“It will also be my first time playing in a big competition like the CAF Confederation Cup. Last season, Stellenbosch reached the semi-finals, and I believe we can do even better this time around,” Stanic added.

The defender has joined fellow new signings, defender Siviwe Nkwali and striker Muzomuhle Khanyi. Steve Barker is beefing up his space after creating space by releasing Kenyan defender Brian Onyango, while Liam De Kock, midfielder Sinhle Nduli and striker Shaakir Ahmed.
