Stellenbosch FC snap up former Pirates and AmaZulu defender

In a move to bolster their defensive depth, Betway Premiership outfit Stellenbosch FC has confirmed the signing of former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC full-back Wayde Jooste.

The 34-year-old joins the Cape Winelands-based outfit as a free agent, bringing a wealth of top-flight experience to Steve Barker’s ambitious squad. Jooste had been unattached since June, following a massive squad overhaul at AmaZulu FC, where he was one of 15 players released at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

Despite his departure from Usuthu, Jooste’s output last season proved he still has plenty to offer at the highest level. He made 22 appearances for the Durban-based side, contributing both a goal and an assist while maintaining a steady defensive presence.

His readiness for the next challenge was further underlined by his recent involvement with Bafana Bafana. Jooste was a key figure in the national team squad, largely composed of free agents, that participated in the 2024 CHAN tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda earlier this year.

Jooste Joins Stellenbosch FC

“Stellenbosch Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of South Africa international defender Wayde Jooste,” reads the club statement. “The 34-year-old arrives in Stellenbosch with more than 200 professional appearances to his name across previous spells with Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows, Highlands Park, Orlando Pirates, Maritzburg United, and AmaZulu.

“Jooste is also a full international with South Africa and recently helped Bafana Bafana achieve a runners-up finish at the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship.”

Jooste’s high-profile stint came at Orlando Pirates, where he spent two seasons at the heart of the Buccaneers’ defence. Following his time in Soweto, he moved to Maritzburg United before his recent tenure with AmaZulu.

The arrival of Jooste at the Danie Craven Stadium provides Steve Barker with a versatile option on the flanks. Known for his crossing ability and tactical discipline, Jooste is expected to provide both competition and mentorship to the younger defenders in the Stellenbosch ranks as they navigate a demanding domestic schedule.

With the club officially announcing his arrival on Thursday, Jooste is expected to begin training immediately, with the coaching staff looking to integrate him into the matchday setup as quickly as possible.
