Stellenbosch seek maximum points in Polokwane City clash

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has stressed the importance of collecting maximum points from Wednesday’s match against fellow Betway Premiership side Polokwane City.

The Western Cape-based side has just returned from Zanzibar where it fulfilled a CAF Confederation Cup group-stage assignment against Singida Black Stars on Sunday.

Barker’s men will end the 2025 calendar year with the Betway Premiership encounter against Polokwane City at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Why Steve Barker wants a win at all-cost

Ahead of the domestic league assignment, the coach challenged his side to build on their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Orbit College FC last week.

“Ending the year with a positive result is massively important to us,” Barker told the club’s website.

“Looking at the log table, it’s an area we want to get away from, and I’ve always said that getting back-to-back wins in the league is really important. After beating Orbit College, it’s important for us at home to follow that up with another three points against Polokwane City…”

Barker admitted that his team started the league campaign on a low note, but he is encouraged by the latest results.

“The first half of the league season has been a bit of a challenge, but we’ve had the opportunity to work on things and improve, which we have, and hopefully we can complete this block of four games, which also included two CAF games, with another positive result,” the coach added.

“Then we can look back at the calendar year, having played as many games as we have, and be satisfied with what we’ve achieved, but the match against Polokwane City is a massively important fixture for us to get through first.”

The Betway Premiership fixture between Stellenbosch FC and Polokwane City kicks off at 7:30pm. The match will be streamed live on SuperSport OTT7.

Stellenbosch have gained winning momentum after picking up two wins, including a 1-0 result against AS Otoho, and drawing one-all with Singida Black Stars.

Stellies lie third from the bottom of the 16-member log table while Rise and Shine occupy seventh place, eight points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.
