Gavin Hunt’s Stellenbosch secure triple blockbuster signing

Stellenbosch FC have bolstered their ranks with a marquee triple signing, unveiling Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kobamelo Kodisang, and Mosa Lebusa.

The arrivals represent a calculated shift in strategy as the club looks to blend elite firepower with proven defensive leadership.

The trio joins the Maroons on short-term deals, providing newly-appointed head coach Gavin Hunt with an immediate injection of elite experience as the club looks to navigate a demanding domestic and continental schedule.

The headline act of the trio is undoubtedly Tshegofatso Mabasa. The 29-year-old marksman makes the move from Orlando Pirates after finding playing time limited under Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Mabasa’s departure from Soweto is bittersweet; he leaves the Buccaneers just eight goals shy of Benedict Vilakazi’s all-time club record of 58. However, his move to the Winelands offers him the chance to rediscover the clinical form that saw him claim the 2023/24 Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot.

With over 70 career goals to his name, Mabasa—who will wear the No. 37—is expected to lead the line with immediate effect.

Joining Mabasa is the versatile Kobamelo Kodisang (26). Having spent significant time in Portugal with the likes of SC Braga, Moreirense, and, most recently, AVS, Kodisang brings a technical edge to the Stellies wings. He will don the No. 28 jersey.

Bolstering the backline is one of South Africa’s most decorated modern-day players, Mosa Lebusa (33). After an iconic eight-season stint at Mamelodi Sundowns that yielded seven league titles and several domestic cups, the veteran defender joins as a free agent. Wearing the No. 31, Lebusa’s “winning mentality” is a key factor behind his arrival.

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie emphasised that these signings are not merely for squad depth, but are strategic moves to elevate the club’s ceiling.

“Our club and new Head Coach are extremely pleased to bring in players of the calibre of Mabasa, Kodisang, and Lebusa,” Benadie said. “These signings represent a clear statement of our intent to improve this season. They are players of an international standard who bring an ingrained winning mentality.”

Immediate Impact

The “Gavin Hunt era” is off to a flyer, and fans may not have to wait long to see the new faces in action. All three players have already integrated into training at the Stellenbosch Academy and are eligible for selection in today’s Betway Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United.

With a Nedbank Cup Round of 32 fixture against Kaizer Chiefs on the horizon, Hunt appears to be building a squad capable of competing with the league’s traditional heavyweights.
