Stockport County manager Dave Challinor has confirmed why the club moved to sign Kenya prospect Tyler Onyango for the second time on a season-long loan deal from Premier League outfit Everton.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who joined Everton Academy aged eight, returned to Stockport, where he spent last term before his loan spell with the eventual play-off semi-finalists was cut short due to injury.
Onyango made five substitute appearances for Everton’s Senior Team after being handed his debut in a FA Cup fourth round win over Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021. The Everton U21s regular has previously had loan stints with League One clubs Burton Albion and Forest Green Rovers in 2022-23.
“We’re all delighted to be able to welcome Tyler back to the Club. Since the start of pre-season our desire to get him back with us has been no secret, but we were understanding of Everton’s position and the necessity to keep him in with them,” Challinor told Stockport website.
“Hopefully now he can pick up where he finished off with us the last time he was here – we’re really looking forward to seeing him get started this time. His athleticism, pace, power and ability to play in numerous positions will be invaluable to us and, importantly, he already knows us and knows what we’re about.”
On his part, Stockport CEO Simon Wilson said: “We are delighted to welcome Tyler back to the club. We have had to be patient as Everton have needed him with their first-team, but that is terrific experience for Tyler which he can bring into his time with us.
“We know he is a versatile player and we believe he can positively contribute to the team in several ways. The last time around it was cut short through injury, but I think we all saw the potential. We are looking forward to working with him again.”
Onyango was born in England to a Kenyan father and English mother. This makes him eligible to play for either Kenya or England national teams. He is a youth international for England at under-17 level.
