Head coach of Sudan national male team James Kwesi Appiah has urged the country’s football federation to incentivize the playing body ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Senegal.
The Falcons of Jediane will host the Teranga Lions on March 17 at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Bengharzi, Libya in the first of two matches for this month. Sudan lead group B on 10 points, two better than Senegal after four matches into the qualifiers.
Appiah, who was reported to have stayed away from the team’s training for 12 days due to unpaid bonuses and salaries, believes his charges can only play above themselves if they are financially sound.
“Senegal is a strong team, but they are not the only ones, and we are also one of the best teams on the continent. We have performed well, and everyone is now talking about the team as strong. We have achieved part of our goals, and now we aspire to achieve more,” Coach Appiah said ahead of the match.
“I hope that the federation will give incentive bonuses to the players, as they deserve it after the great performance they gave. Such incentives will help them achieve a positive result against a big team like Senegal, which will enhance our chances even more.”
Since his appointment, coach Appiah has guided Sudan to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. Wins against Senegal and South Sudan this month will get Sudan closer to the qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
