Wednesday’s highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs ended with a dull and disappointing 0-0 draw at FNB Stadium.
Sundowns made little use of their superiority in possession while Chiefs failed to show the killer instinct necessary to dispatch the reigning champions of South Africa. The visitors from Pretoria were fortunate to escape with a point thanks to the efforts of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who kept Chiefs from opening the scoring during the first half.
Outside of a long range effort from Arthur Sales that had Chiefs keeper Brandon Petersen scrambling, the second half was all Chiefs. Makabi Lilepo caused plenty of issues down the right flank but AmaKhosi continued to have issues finding the final ball. Many forays by the Chiefs attack down both wings kept Sundowns on the defensive but the search for a goal ended without success.
Kaizer Chiefs remain level at the top of the table with Sekhukhune United on ten points through four games. Sundowns are two points back, level with Durban City on eight points.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Golden Arrows were the only winners with a 2-1 result over Magesi FC in Durban. Sekhukhune found a late equalizer from substitute Ronaldo Maarman to draw AmaZulu 1-1 at home. On Tuesday, Orlando Pirates were among the victors with an understated victory over Orbit College.
The league resumes on Friday with one game between Siwelele and Richards Bay. The intensity picks up on Saturday with five games, including an intriguing clash between Sundowns and hosts Stellenbosch. Chiefs will travel to face Golden Arrows.
