Sundowns coach issues update on Themba Zwane’s injury

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has given an injury update on captain Themba Zwane, revealing that the midfielder is expected to be sidelined for approximately two months.

Zwane sustained the injury during the first half of the team’s MTN8 semi-final first-leg match against Orlando Pirates last Saturday. This comes as a major setback for the star player, who recently returned to action after a lengthy absence due to an Achilles tendon injury from last season.

Following Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night, Cardoso shared the disheartening news during a press conference at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

“Unfortunately, Themba will be out for, I believe, maybe two months, probably,” he said. The Portuguese coach added that the club’s medical team is working hard to shorten that recovery timeline.

Cardoso emphasised the significance of Zwane’s absence, stating that any player not fully fit is a “big blow” to the team. However, he remains optimistic about the captain’s return.

“He will come back stronger for sure,” Cardoso said. “Let’s hope we can make it as short as possible… we will rise with others.”
