Sundowns have confirmed that Thembinkosi Lorch will not be returning to the club, with a move back to Wydad AC in North Africa now imminent.
Lorch, who spent a successful loan spell with the Moroccan giants last season, did not join Sundowns for pre-season training, sparking widespread speculation about his future. It was also reported that the attacker was not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso’s long-term plans.
The 32-year-old originally signed with Sundowns in January 2024, leaving Orlando Pirates to reunite with coach Rulani Mokwena, whom he later joined at Wydad.
Despite Mokwena’s subsequent departure from the Moroccan club, Lorch remained a fan favourite, delivering several standout performances. After his short-term loan ended, Wydad reportedly took some time to finalise a buyout, but an agreement has now been reached, clearing the path for him to rejoin the “Red Castle.”
The move was widely expected, particularly after Lorch’s impressive performances during his loan. He was a key player in the Botola Pro League, scoring two goals, and later featured in all of Wydad’s matches at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.
In a statement posted on their social media, Sundowns thanked the player for his contributions. “After two unforgettable years, one league title, 26 appearances, seven goals, and four assists, the Yellow Nation thanks and celebrates Thembinkosi Lorch,” the club said. “Wishing you all the best as you begin the next chapter of your journey.”
