Mamelodi Sundowns dangerous against clever teams - Barker

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has explained what makes Mamelodi Sundowns a dangerous team to play against, especially for intelligent opposition.

Following his team’s 3-0 loss to the Betway Premiership holders on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Barker lauded Mamelodi Sundowns as an unstoppable team. Barker explained how Mamelodi Sundowns overpower opponents, forcing them into errors.

“…Sundowns are a very sharp team in terms of forcing errors, if you try to get too smart and clever. Unfortunately, we tried to be too smart and clever and found ourselves three-nil down,” he told the club’s website.

Having stated before the game that Stellenbosch FC were capable of stunning the Pretoria-based team, Barker has changed his tune.

“They are one of those sides that, if you make mistakes, they will punish you. They showed once again why they are the best team by far in our league. We felt that, and were beaten by a really good and dominant team on the day. We wish them well in the [upcoming] Champions League final, where hopefully they will do South Africa proud,” he added.

Stellies’ bid for a top-three place continues when they face SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch at 3pm on Saturday.
