Mamelodi Sundowns defender Kegan Johannes has admitted that the South African champions had no idea about Sibanye Golden Stars, Saturday’s Nedbank Cup round-of-32 opponents.
Miguel Cardoso’s men beat the third tier minnows 5-2 in a match where the Betway Premiership holders struggled at times with Johannes attributing this to a lack of knowledge about the opponent's playing style.
“It was a tough game for us because we did not know what to expect from the opponent but we had to take the game professionally and give it our best,” he told Sundowns media.
The 23-year-old admitted Sundowns nearly let the game slip through their fingers as Golden Stars threatened to cause an upset.
“We allowed them into the game a bit but we had to show our quality that we are Mamelodi Sundowns and we got through,” he added. The former SuperSport United player was also happy to complete his first 90 minutes in Sundowns colors, describing the performance as a building block for better things to come.
Cardoso’s men scored through Malibongwe Khoza, Tashreeq Matthews (twice), Arthur Sales, and Kobamelo Kodisang.
In other games played on Saturday, Polokwane City edged The Bees FC 1-0 whereas Orlando Pirates were 3-1 winners over Richards Bay. The action continued on Sunday evening when Kaizer Chiefs thrashed Free Agents FC 4-0 courtesy of Pule Mmodi’s double and one goal each from Inacio Miguel and Ranga Chivaviro.
