Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa has pinpointed a crucial error from the team’s season-opening draw against Chippa United, urging his teammates not to make the same mistake in their upcoming match against AmaZulu FC.
The 1-1 draw with Chippa United was the first time since the 2014/15 season that the defending Betway Premiership champions failed to win their first match of the season. Reflecting on the game, Mdunyelwa felt the team was not tactically in sync.
“I felt like we did not apply ourselves the way we wanted to… and we did not carry out the plan we had for the opposition,” he said.
Looking ahead to Tuesday’s match, Mdunyelwa confirmed that the Sundowns technical team has identified both the weaknesses and strengths of AmaZulu. He stated that the team has been working on specific tactical plans to exploit their opponents’ vulnerabilities.
“We are very much aware of their weaknesses and their strengths, so we will try to capitalise on their weaknesses and try to limit their strengths,” Mdunyelwa said.
He also singled out several AmaZulu players as key threats, including Hendrick Ekstein, Riaan Hanamub, Bongani Zungu, Taariq Fielies, and Sandile Mthethwa. Mdunyelwa emphasised that shutting down these influential players will be a priority for the Sundowns defence.
Sundowns will host AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:30 PM., looking to secure their first victory of the season.
