Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Thlopie Motsepe has hailed the intensifying rivalry with Orlando Pirates, suggesting that the “neck-and-neck” battle for the Betway Premiership title is the perfect preparation for their CAF Champions League ambitions.
The Brazilians have endured a turbulent few months, with sections of the Masandawana faithful previously calling for the head of coach Miguel Cardoso following early exits from the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup, and Nedbank Cup. However, the tide has turned at Chloorkop. Despite those domestic stumbles, Sundowns have marched into the Champions League quarter-finals, where a date with Malian giants Stade Malien awaits.
While the club prides itself on sweeping every trophy available, Motsepe believes the current pressure applied by the Buccaneers is sharpening his side for the “Holy Grail” of African football.
“The league campaign is one of the most important trophies we strive for every season. As defending champions, there’s an intense amount of pride we draw from that,” Motsepe told the media. “It ensures we approach every single game with the right determination and commitment.”
Motsepe was quick to credit the chasing pack, specifically noting that the gap between the top eight has narrowed significantly this season.
“I think it’s great that we have such a neck-and-neck title campaign. Our competitors deserve a lot of credit. From number one all the way to number eight, it’s not a steep decline. You can see the competition, and they help us be better.”
The chairman drew parallels to last season’s continental success, noting that having two South African giants deep in CAF competitions elevates the entire standard of the PSL.
“When we went to the Champions League final last season, it was because our competitors, Orlando Pirates, were there with us. They reached the semi-finals and had a very strong campaign. Rivalry only makes it better for those watching and the competitors themselves.”
“The greatest rivalries in sports are usually between iconic entities reaching elite levels, and that’s what Pirates are doing with us right now. It’s incredibly exciting.”
As the business end of the season approaches, Motsepe expressed confidence in Cardoso’s technical team and the squad’s “quiet resilience.”
“Champions League remains our Holy Grail. We’re excited about how the team has turned a corner and clicked into another gear. Our senior players have really pulled the group together, doing an incredible job in terms of leadership and integrating new faces.”
“With the technical leadership we have—people who have been to the final before—you start to see more trust and confidence. But with that comes a determination that we’re going to start showing more and more.”
