Ten-man Sundowns sink Arrows, but Pirates stay atop the log

Mamelodi Sundowns fell short of returning to the top of the Betway Premiership standings on Wednesday night, despite securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The result sees the Brazilians move level on points with Orlando Pirates, who maintained their position at the top spot following their own 2-1 win over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on the same evening.

While both titans sit level on 44 points, the Buccaneers’ superior goal difference ensures they remain log leaders, leaving Masandawana in second place.

Mokoena and Rayners Give Sundowns Control

Sundowns started with intent, and it was the influential Teboho Mokoena who broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. After a sustained period of pressure, Mokoena found the bottom right corner with a clinical right-footed strike, following a well-weighted assist from Aubrey Modiba.

The Brazilians doubled their advantage just three minutes into the second half. Arthur Sales, who was a creative spark throughout the night, turned provider yet again, floating a cross to the left side of the six-yard box for Iqraam Rayners to head home.

Adams Sees Red as Arrows Fight Back

The complexion of the game shifted dramatically in the 51st minute when Jayden Adams was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Ayabulela Maxwele. The dismissal forced coach Miguel Cardoso to reshuffle his pack, introducing Marcelo Allende to stabilise the midfield.

Down to ten men, Sundowns faced a resurgent Arrows side. The visitors were handed a lifeline in the 76th minute when Khuliso Mudau was penalised for a handball in the penalty area. Ivorian marksman Sede Junior Dion stepped up and confidently converted the penalty into the top right corner, setting up a nervous final 15 minutes for the home faithful.

Williams Heroics Secure the Points

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sundowns held firm. Ronwen Williams proved his worth with two crucial saves—first denying a headed effort from Ayanda Jiyane and later parrying a long-range stinger from Ntandoyenkosi Mabaso.

As the clock ticked down, Arrows threw everything forward, including a late substitution that saw Thokozani Khumalo replace goal-scorer Dion, but the Sundowns defence, anchored by Grant Kekana, remained resolute to see out the victory.
