The Mamelodi Sundowns hierarchy released a scathing statement on Tuesday, threatening legal action against supporters who turned on the technical team following last Friday’s 2-2 stalemate against Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League.
The atmosphere at Loftus Versfeld Stadium has turned toxic. What started as a frustrating draw ended in chaos as sporting director Flemming Berg was reportedly doused with an “unidentified liquid” and head coach Miguel Cardoso was forced to flee through a back door under heavy security guard.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation… Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal,” the club warned.
While the board talks about discipline, the stands are talking about one man: Pitso Mosimane.
The deafening chants of “Pitso! Pitso!” that drowned out the final whistle weren’t just noise—they were a mandate. With FARPost reporting that “Jingles” is already in advanced talks for a sensational return, Cardoso looks increasingly like a man living on borrowed time.
The fans are tired of “naïve” football. They want the ruthlessness that Mosimane—and later Rulani Mokwena—instilled in the Brazilian DNA.
“Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match.
“The has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.
“As The Tshwane giants, we will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches. Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns Supporters.
“The Players and Technical Team of the club are focusing on retaining the League Title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters.”
Cardoso is now entering a week that will likely decide his fate. The schedule is unforgiving. Tonight: A high-pressure trip to Polokwane to face Sekhukhune United. Friday: A do-or-die Champions League rematch against Al Hilal in Rwanda.
