Three days after they were pipped 0-1 in the first meeting, Nigeria flipped the script emphatically, beating the Lionesses 3-1.
The Indomitable Lionesses, who claimed victory in the first friendly between the two sides last Saturday, went ahead after just seven minutes through Christiane Kiki Meva.
However, forward Chinwendu Ihezuo drew Nigeria level in the 32nd minute, rising above her marker to power home a header from Rinsola Babajide’s cross. The comeback was completed just before halftime; after a scramble inside the box, Babajide—who assisted the equalizer—showed sharp instincts to fire Nigeria in front in the 43rd minute.
The defending WAFCON champions cmaintained their dominance after the break, adding a third through right-back Michelle Alozie four minutes after the hour mark. Alozie nodded home captain Rasheedat Ajibade’s cross from close range.
Both teams used the games as part of their preparation for the 14th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
As the tournament approaches, Justine Madugu’s side will be hoping to defend their title once again but face a tricky set of fixtures in placed in Group C opponents, which include the rising power of Zambia, Egypt, and Malawi.
Cameroon are placed in Group D beside West African trio of Ghana, Mali and debutantes Cape Verde.
The top two sides in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, and the four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027.
Meanwhile, the hosts and rivals Cameroon face a challenging path in Group A, where they are set to battle against the defending champions South Africa and a resilient Mali side in a bid to secure a spot in the knockout stages.
Nigeria won their record extending 10th WAFCON at the last tournament in Morocco 2024 when they defeated the hosts 3–2 in the final last July.
