Sweden’s Kim Lars Bjorkegren hails smooth Ghana experience

Head coach of Ghana’s senior female team Kim Lars Bjorkegren has reacted to his journey that has brought an African Cup of Nations bronze medal to his wardrobe.

The Swedish trainer replaced Nora Hauptle who left to join the Zambia national female team after her contract expired with Ghana.

Ghana won bronze at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and they have booked their spot at the next edition in the North African country next year after dispatching Egypt 7-0 over a two legged-qualifying tie.

Bjorkegren, who masterminded these feats, takes solace in the fact that, his journey with the Black Queens has been fruitful.

“Overall, they have been a great experience, and I’m so happy that I took the opportunity. I wish that 2026 is going to be an even more successful year,” he told Ghanafa.org.

Ghana’s Black Queens were handed a 2-0 defeat by England’s Lionesses in their first-ever women’s international meeting played at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on December 2.

Kim Lars believes the performance of the Black Queens against the Lionesses meant that the team is gradually climbing to the level many expect them to reach.

“It was one of the toughest games you can play,” the coach admitted, but stressed its importance. It showed that, OK, we’re not England yet, but we’re getting closer, it was a unique, great opportunity for players to see what world-class excellence requires.

The tournament has been expanded to sixteen teams with the top four teams in the competition qualifying directly for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, while two additional teams will have the chance to join them through the inter-confederation playoffs.
