“Taiwo Awoniyi is doing much better” – Espirito Santo declares ahead of Chelsea game

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has given a positive update on Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

The 27-year-old collided with the goal post, causing abdominal discomfort in the process. Awoniyi was forced to have surgery and was placed in an induced coma after the on-field injury resulted in a life threatening emergency.

He has since been out of coma and is responding to treatment. Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has said that the Super Eagles forward has returned to normal life.

“He is much better, he has already been able to walk. The doctors informed me that he has already started his normal life, so he is much better,” Espirito Santo said in a pre-match press conference ahead of the Chelsea clash on Sunday.

The injury ruled Awoniyi out for the rest of the season but he is expected to return stronger next season. Despite grappling with injuries, Awoniyi has made 26 appearances with a goal to his credit this season.

Forest are hunting for a European spot next season when they host Chelsea on the final day fixture on Sunday.
