Malawian sensation Temwa Chawinga made the difference in a clash pitting the top two teams in the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), after her second half goal helped Kansas City Current to floor Orlando Pride 1-0 at Inter&Co Stadium on Friday.
Coming up against Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda of Orlando Pride, Chawinga’s 52nd minute goal carried the day to help Kansas City register their seventh win of the season and remain unbeaten in the top-flight.
Chawinga broke the deadlock with an incredible individual effort, slamming a breakaway opportunity into the back of the net for the lone goal of the contest. The Current’s defense held firm to keep Orlando off the scoresheet, securing goalkeeper Lorena’s fifth shutout of the regular season.
Chawinga’s game-winning strike marked the 25th goal of her NWSL regular season career, becoming the first player in Current franchise history to reach the threshold. Chawinga reached the milestone in just 34 regular season appearances and is the fastest player in NWSL history to reach 25 regular season goals.
She did so in six fewer games than the second-quickest player to reach the mark and is the 18th player in NWSL history to record 25 or more goals with one club.
The win kept Chawinga’s KC top of the table with 21 points, San Diego Wave are second on 17 while Pride remained third on 16 points. So far this season, Chawinga has scored five goals from nine matches and provided one assist.
