Malawi Scorchers forward Temwa Chawinga has shared her thoughts on the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), revealing the team she hopes will lift the trophy in Morocco.

While the Scorchers did not qualify for the tournament, Chawinga, who plays for Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League, has backed Zambia to return home with the trophy.

“I would like our neighbouring country, Zambia, to win WAFCON because we speak the same language and we share the same culture,” said Chawinga, as quoted by BolaNews. “So I wish Zambia to win, and my friends Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji to win it.”

On Malawi missing out on the tournament, Chawinga said: “I feel so bad not participating in such a big tournament. Maybe they [the Football Association of Malawi] can go to Zambia and learn how women’s football works or something. Because Zambia enters every competition, big competitions. But for us in Malawi, it’s just COSAFA, which we know.

“We now have some Malawian players playing in France, Zambia, DR Congo, and myself here in the USA. So I think if maybe we put a lot of money into women’s football, I think the national team is going to be strong and also participate in big tournaments like the World Cup and WAFCON.”

The Copper Queens will open their Group A campaign against hosts Morocco on Saturday, 5 July at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

They will then face Senegal on 9 July and wrap up the group phase against DR Congo on 12 July, with both matches taking place at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.
