“Thank you for the trust’ - Olunga delivers message after leaving Al Duhail SC

Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga has talked for the first time following his decision to leave Qatar Stars League outfit Al Duhail SC after four and half years at the club.


The club announced the exit of Olunga on Thursday. Speaking on his decision to quit, Olunga thanked the club management for giving him support while he was playing at the club and promised to stay close to the club.


“First of all I would like to thank the management of the club, starting with the President of the club, the vice-president of the club, the backroom support staff that have really shown great faith in me, since I arrived here, and I want to say thank you to the coaches that I have worked with, I want to say thank you to the players, that we have shared with the dressing room and the good moments together,” said Olunga.


“I want to say thank you to all the subordinate staff, who have really helped us, the medical team that have been with us throughout the time I have been here. It has been a really good four and half seasons since I came here, they have really shown me love.


"I have really enjoyed my time here at Al Duhail, it has been a good journey, all in all I have enjoyed my time in this beautiful club. I leave Duhail with my head held high and proud of my achievements with the great club, and now wait to see what the future holds.”


Towering striker Olunga joined Duhail in 2021 on a three-season contract, for a reported transfer fee of €6 million. He made his debut for the club on January 12, in a 3-1 away loss against Al Sadd. The now 31-year-old previously starred with Japanese club Kashiwa Reysol before making his big-money move to Qatar.


On 25 January 2021, Olunga scored a hat-trick in Duhail's 6-0 win against Al Ahli in the Emir of Qatar Cup Olunga finished as the top scorer of the 2021 AFC Champions League, but Al-Duhail crashed out of the competition after a 1-1 draw with Al Ahli SC of Saudi Arabia in late April that year.
