Mamelodi Sundowns’ lightning-fast winger Thapelo Maseko has officially completed a loan move to Cypriot First Division side AEL Limassol, seeking to reignite a career that had recently stalled at Chloorkop.
The 22-year-old Bafana Bafana international joins the European outfit until the end of the current season, a move confirmed by the “Yellow and Blues” on Tuesday morning.
Since his high-profile move from SuperSport United in July 2023, Maseko’s journey with the Brazilians has been a tale of two halves. While he initially shone on the continental stage, his fortunes dipped following the appointment of head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Competition for places in the Sundowns attack has been relentless. With only seven appearances this season, Maseko’s path to the starting XI was further blocked by the recent blockbuster signing of Monnapule Saleng from Orlando Pirates.
The mental toll of his lack of minutes was no secret; the winger recently took to social media to candidly discuss his struggles with being sidelined. This move to Cyprus represents not just a tactical shift but a vital opportunity for a mental and professional reset.
Maseko won’t be navigating the Mediterranean alone. He joins fellow South African attacker Luther Singh at AEL, potentially forming an all-South African partnership that could trouble Cypriot defences.
In an official statement, AEL Limassol welcomed their new acquisition:
“We welcome Thapelo Maseko to the big family of AEL. A player with experience in the African Football League and CAF Champions League, we wish him every success in the blue and yellow jersey.”
Maseko is the second significant departure from the reigning South African champions in this window, following veteran defender Mosa Lebusa’s move to Stellenbosch FC.
For Sundowns, the loan allows a valuable asset to gain European experience and market value. For Maseko, the mission is simple: rediscover the explosive form that made him one of the most feared young talents in the PSL.
