The Pirates effect: How Casric Stars’ brand exploded after Bucs scalp

Casric Stars co-owner and head coach Bucs Mthombeni has opened up on the massive commercial and tribal growth the club has experienced since their historic Nedbank Cup elimination of Orlando Pirates.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) title contenders sent shockwaves through South African football in February when they knocked the Buccaneers out in the Round of 16 via a dramatic penalty shootout.

That result has served as a catalyst for a club now fighting on two fronts. Currently sitting fourth in the MFC—just two points adrift of leaders Milford FC with eight games to play—Stars are also preparing for a high-stakes Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Betway Premiership outfit Durban City FC at Chatsworth Stadium this Saturday (15:00 CAT).

FROM UNDERDOGS TO HOUSEHOLD NAMES – CASRIC STARS

Speaking ahead of their trip to KwaZulu-Natal, Mthombeni highlighted how the “Ghost” slaying has moved the needle for the Mpumalanga-based side in terms of visibility and fan engagement.“It’s a lot, my brother. Before we played Orlando Pirates, we had less than 10 supporter branches,” Mthombeni told the media. “But now we have surpassed 15 branches, and our fan base is growing daily. Everywhere we go now, people know exactly who Casric Stars are because of that performance against Pirates.”

Mthombeni noted that the newfound fame has placed a different kind of pressure on his players, who are now recognised as local celebrities.

“There is a lot of demand for the players now; people want to know their stories. The brand is well-known, and I believe we are now in a position to attract significant sponsorship,” he added.

THE CHATSWORTH INVASION

The growth of the brand is perhaps best reflected in the logistics for this weekend’s semi-final. While Casric previously travelled with modest support, the club is now struggling to keep up with the demand for transport to Durban.“People have fallen in love with Casric. As we speak, we already have five buses confirmed for Durban, but the demand suggests we need more than 10. The brand has moved to another level entirely.”

While Casric Stars look to book a spot in the final, the other semi-final sees TS Galaxy host Milford FC at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, setting up the potential for an all-MFC final.
