Veteran midfielder Themba Zwane has shed light on why he believes the current Mamelodi Sundowns squad is superior to the famed 2016 CAF Champions League winners
Zwane made the bold comparison as Sundowns gear up for the first leg of the Champions League final against Egyptian Premier League outfit Pyramids FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The game is set for Saturday (today) at 3 PM CAT with Sundowns keen to deliver a strong showing before their journey to Cairo.
Captain Zwane and goalkeeper Denis Onyango are the sole remaining players from Sundowns' triumphant 2016 campaign. Although Thapelo Morena joined late in the 2016 group stages, he didn't feature in any matches.
"I think with this group, I can say it is better," said Zwane. "But it is more of the same because of the brotherhood that we have and the understanding.
For Zwane, the current Sundowns squad's greatest strength lies in its abundance of leaders, a quality he believes distinguishes them from the 2016 team that boasted influential figures like Teko Modise, Thabo Nthethe, Bangaly Soumahoro, Hlompho Kekana, Percy Tau, Khama Billiat, and Leonardo Castro under coach Pitso Mosimane.
“I feel like everyone is a leader in this group. You don’t have to put on an armband to be a leader, but you can see that everyone can lead," added the Sundowns skipper, Zwane.
“You see, when we play, everyone gives instructions because we understand each other, along with the love that we give as a team. I think what helps is the communication because we communicate a lot as players and understand each other. But mostly like I said, it’s the love we have for each other."
