Themba Zwane reacts to Bafana Bafana’s World Cup joy

Bafana Bafana vice-captain Themba Zwane has expressed his overwhelming happiness after the national team secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the first time South Africa has qualified outright since 2002.

Coach Hugo Broos’ side delivered when it mattered most, defeating Rwanda 3-0 at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday to sensationally top Group C. They finished the qualification campaign one point ahead of second-placed Nigeria. Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis, and Evidence Makgopa scored the goals.

The qualification journey was a rollercoaster marked by significant challenges. Bafana Bafana had points docked by FIFA for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, and navigated the crucial final camp despite a host of injuries and suspensions.

Key players like Iqraam Rayners, Lyle Foster, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Ime Okon, and Relebohile Mofokeng were unavailable. Zwane himself, along with fellow Sundowns teammate Grant Kekana, was ruled out due to injury for the final fixtures.

Despite these setbacks and a frustrating 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe last Friday that threatened their ambitions, the team defied the odds to clinch the top spot.

‘The Country is Happy’: Themba Zwane

Speaking on SuperSport TV, Mamelodi Sundowns star Zwane highlighted the collective sense of achievement and the positive impact on the nation.

“It’s happiness overall. It’s always good to see the country so happy. The boys did their job very well, and we are so happy as a country,” Zwane said.

He also sent an encouraging message to supporters, promising the team will continue to deliver results.

“The message to South Africans is that the guys are doing well, obviously we want to see them happy, and we will do our best as a team and make sure that we make them happy all the time.”

With the World Cup finals set for the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Bafana Bafana’s immediate focus will now shift to preparing for the 2025 AFCON finals.
