Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana star, Themba Zwane, is preparing to make his highly anticipated return from injury and has already set the tone for the CAF Champions League group stages by labelling an upcoming opponent as “dirty.”
The veteran midfielder, affectionately known as ‘Mshishi,’ has been sidelined but is reportedly nearing full fitness, with a potential return to action expected before the end of November. This news comes as a significant boost for both Sundowns and the national team, as Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is keen to have the star player available for the AFCON tournament in December 2025/January 2026.
Zwane’s timely recovery aligns perfectly with Sundowns’ push into the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition. The Pretoria giants have been drawn into Group C alongside:
FC Lupopo (DR Congo). MC Alger (Algeria). Al Hilal SC (Sudan)
The Brazilians will kick off their Group C campaign by hosting Congolese side FC Lupopo in Pretoria on November 21. Lupopo secured their spot in the group stage after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Orlando Pirates, having first beaten the Buccaneers 3-0 at home.
It was their performance against the Soweto side that led to Zwane’s strong assessment.
“We got an opportunity to watch them against Pirates,” Zwane remarked following the draw. “They are dirty and the tackles were flying, but they put in hard work.”
Despite the perceived physicality, ‘Mshishi’ stressed the importance of tactical preparation. “We’re going to get time to analyse them so that we know where we can capitalise when we play against them. It’s going to be an exciting game to watch.”
The 36-year-old last featured for Sundowns in September. Providing an update on his status, Zwane revealed he is now training pain-free and is focused on building strength.
“I’m feeling good, I’m alright and running without feeling any pain,” added Zwane. “Now I’m just doing more strengthening so that I can be stronger. I’m looking forward to being back on the pitch.”
He also expressed confidence in being fully fit and ready for the AFCON tournament next year.
