Sekhukhune United’s latest transfer gamble, ex-Bafana Bafana star Lebogang Phiri, may have arrived with “rust” after six months on the sidelines, but head coach Eric Tinkler is certain he can polish the midfielder back into a diamond.
The 31-year-old former Bafana Bafana international made his first appearance for Ba Bina Noko as a second-half substitute during Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC. While the result saw Sekhukhune slide to fourth in the Betway Premiership standings, the focus post-match remained on the potential of their new January acquisition.
Phiri signed a short-term six-month deal this window, aiming to revive a career that saw him excel in Europe before his recent hiatus. For Tinkler, the decision to bring Phiri to Limpopo wasn’t just about filling a gap—it was personal.
“I’ve known him since he was 12 years old,” Tinkler revealed. “He’s a phenomenal, professional hard worker. He’s been out of the game, yes, but he looks after his body.”
The primary hurdle for Phiri is “game conditioning.” Despite staying disciplined during his time as a free agent, the intensity of the Betway Premiership is a different beast. Tinkler, however, has already set a timeline for the midfielder’s full integration.
Current Status: Building match sharpness after a six-month layoff.
The Tinkler Verdict: Confidence in Phiri’s “elite” work ethic.
Target Date: Expected to be at 100% by the upcoming clash against TS Galaxy.
With 25 points on the board, Sekhukhune is firmly in the hunt for a CAF competition spot. Tinkler believes Phiri’s technical talent—honed during his years in Denmark and France—will be the “X-factor” they need to stabilise their top-four ambitions.
“I know the talent. I know what he can give us,” Tinkler concluded, dismissing concerns over the player’s age or recent inactivity.
