Leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets went four points clear at the TNM Super League summit after coming from behind to defeat holders Silver Strikers 2-1 in a controversy-laden match in Blantyre on Sunday.
The defending champions from the capital city Lilongwe came to the commercial capital hoping to avenge the home 1-0 loss they suffered to the record winners Bullets in the Super League’s first round.
For the better part of the first half, Peter Mgangira’s Strikers looked sharper and purposeful in attack, but they were only let down by poor finishing as Maxwell Paipi missed with a free header from Chinsinsi Maonga in the 25th minute.
With the clock ticking close to half time, Chikumbutso Salima nearly fashioned an equalizer when he whipped a dangerous ball into the box but the reds could not provide the final finish. The two teams went into the break dreadlocked at 0-0.
The visitors started the second match in the best possible way as they scored through Anthony Joseph in the 66th minute. However, Bullets found a way four minutes later. Hassan Kajoke found space on the edge of the box and played a cutback which Ephraim Kondowe swept past diving Strikers keeper George Chikooka.
Peter Mponda’s team finally snatched a late winner when referee Masauko Msungama awarded them a penalty claiming Chikooka had fouled advancing Salima in the box. Kajoke stepped forward to send Chikooka the wrong way in the 81st minute. Silver remain in third place.
Strikers thought they had snatched a late equaliser from a goal-mouth scramble, however, the referee ruled that the ball had not crossed the line, adding more controversy to the match.
Elsewhere, second-placed Mighty Wanderers won the road 1-0 through Isaac Kaliyati’s goal to defeat Dedza Dynamos FC. Creck Sporting Club and Chitipa United drew 0-0.
