Toby Sibbick leaves Wigan for fellow League One club

Uganda Cranes defender Toby Sibbick will continue his journey in England’s League One with a new club after completing a transfer to Burton Albion from Wigan Athletic on Thursday.

The 26-year-old joins Burton on a two-year contract after the club paid Wigan an undisclosed fee. Sibbick was a regular sight in the Wigan lineup before falling out of favor at the end of the season, prompting a move to a new environment. Wigan finished the season in 15th place while Sibbick’s new club just avoided relegation in 20th position.

Born in England to a Ugandan mother, Sibbick elected to represent Uganda and made his debut for the Cranes in a friendly against Ghana in March 2024. He was called back up to the Uganda setup for their friendlies in early June, playing the full match in a 1-1 draw with The Gambia.

Sibbick began his professional career with AFC Wimbledon in League One, also spending time with second tier EFL Championship side Barnsley and Scottish Premiership side Hearts before joining Wigan ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. Known for his versatility and the ability to play any defensive position, Sibbick will be a valuable asset as Burton look to avoid another relegation battle in the 2025-26 season.
