Rivers Angels head coach Tosan Blankson has expressed confidence over his team’s ability to win the upcoming Federation Cup final against fellow Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) side Nasarawa Amazons.
The highly anticipated showdown will take place on Saturday, June 28, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
Speaking during the pre-match conference, Blankson acknowledged that Nasarawa Amazons pose a formidable contest, especially after their victory over Rivers Angels in the NWFL Super 6.
However, he noted that the Federation Cup presents an opportunity to secure silverware and remarked on his team’s improved mentality and tactical preparation heading into the final.
“This final means everything to us. We missed out in the league, and this is our only chance to win a trophy this season. That alone is a big motivation. Yes, Nasarawa beat us in the Super 6, but finals are different. We’re ready.”
“Our preparation has been intense. The girls are focused, and we’ve corrected our mistakes. We want to bring the trophy home to our fans.”
Also speaking ahead of the game, Rivers Angels player Catherine Kenneth said that they aren’t under any stress as they will not suffer another defeat to Nasarawa Amazons.
“We are not under any pressure, we are just going there to have a good game and lift the trophy. We don’t suffer the same defeat twice. Since we could not leave the Super 6 (with a) trophy this is what we see as a consolation.”
Rivers Angels, one of Nigeria’s most successful women’s football clubs, have endured a mixed season, falling short in key moments. However, the Federation Cup run has brought renewed belief and the team is determined to finish strong.
The Federation Cup final is scheduled for the weekend and promises to be a thrilling showdown between two of the country’s top women’s teams. Both sides are known for their competitive edge and attacking style of play, setting the stage for a closely contested encounter.
Victory would mark a significant redemption for Rivers Angels and provide a positive conclusion to an otherwise challenging season.
The two Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) heavyweights last met in the NWFL Super Six playoffs, where Nasarawa Amazons edged Rivers Angels 2–1. Rivers Angels won their 9th title in 2024 by defeating Naija Ratels FC 1-0 in the final and are looking for a 10th title.
