Tragedy has struck the Mauritian football fraternity following the death of referee Nabeel Soogy, who drowned on Tuesday while trying to rescue another man.
The Mauritius Football Association (MFA) has released a statement confirming the death of the 39-year-old referee who was also a teacher.
“It is with regret that we learned about the demise of Nabeel Soogy under tragic circumstances. The latter was a teacher by profession and an MFA referee. The Referee Commission and the entire MFA extend their deepest sympathy to his family and all his relatives,” said the MFA in a statement read by Pan-Africa Football.
Local news outlets such as Defimedia.info in Mauritius report that the tragedy occurred in Benares lagoon on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 11.
Soogy is said to have dived into the water to try and rescue local resident Rakesh Kautick from drowning, only for both of them to be swept away by raging water. His body has since been reportedly recovered while Kautick remains missing and a search has been mounted.
